My Cousin calls me from time to time to get technical advice on different tents he is working on.   Manu Kingston of MZK Designs, designs and installs Special Event Lighting and has a real knack for decorating weddings.  Since I know tents, and he knows lighting, it is always fun to share ideas with each other.  This particular job was held on an estate in the Hamptons, and got my attention because the client was interested in some very unusual lighting concepts. I offered to drive up and work under Manu as one of his lighting crew, knowing there was a lot I could learn from “The Pro”.  Well, I had a great time, and here’s what I saw!

When I arrived, New York Tent (NYT) had installed a 50 x 100 Anchor Navi-Trac with 10 ft. legs inside of a tennis court.  NYT also had the court covered with what we call a “lay down” plywood floor, which would later be topped with an ebony wood plank floor.

NYT then installed a trussed pool cover system topped with 3/4″ frosted Lucite.  The cover would first be a part of a a pre-dinner social hour. Later, guests would return to see Manu’s lighting magic, where he used specialty water proof LED light fixtures to make the translucent platform come alive as a glowing dancefloor.

Here’s a few shots of what was happening on the site:

It’s a great thing to step out of ones comfort zone, and try different things. I am glad I took this trip, and am looking forward to showing you photos of the finished shots including the fantastic lighting. Because the job is being submitted for an industry award by the event planner, they asked that we hold off until the results are in. With people like Manu and New York Tent working their magic, I know they have a great shot at it!
