Freezin’ for a reason!

polar_logoMany call them crazy, insane, bizarre and even senseless. However, the people involved with the Polar Bear Plunge should be referred to as caring, compassionate, and kind hearted. These supporters risk hypothermia to raise cash for over 20,000 Special Olympic Athletes across the state. Many of us don’t want to imagine what freezing water feels like, but the volunteers involved with the Special Olympics look forward to jumping in the Susquehanna River every winter for a good cause. I understand it is nearly impossible to describe how cold that water feels this time of the year, but to put it in perspective, large ice chunks have to be dug out by construction equipment in order for the frigid water to be exposed for the event.

batmanWe have been involved with this event for the past 4 years and each year we have seen the turnout grow immensely. We have also noticed that year after year, more characters show up to take the plunge. As you can see from the photos, Batman and Robin, Superman, and Mickey Mouse were all in attendance. Last year included custom ice sculptures made during the event and an inflatable obstacle course for all participants and onlookers. This year they plan to have a Tug-a-War event for all teams participating.

polarThis is the largest year-round organization devoted to sports training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. By being a part of the Plunge experience, you are allowing thousands upon thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities to experience a brighter tomorrow. If you’re bold enough to take the plunge, visit www.sopam.org to register online. The event will be held on February 6, 2010 at City Island. Even if you are not risking hypothermia by jumping in the water, it is just as entertaining to watch a few hundred people splash around in freezing temperatures. Another great place to find them is their facebook site that features a large amount of photos taken by all the volunteers involved. We look forward to seeing a record breaking turnout this year.

The photos shown were taken from the facebook site of the Polar Plunge during last years event.

Chief checks out the Stage Cover at Woofstock

Click here to learn more about HELPING ANIMALS with your friends at CPAA

Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance ------A wonderful group of area shelters and rescue organizations working together to save the lives of dogs, cats and other companion animals.

Woofstock 2009 was another  ”Barking” success, drawing over 1000 dogs of every breed, size and temperament.  Situated at Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park between the Civic Club and the Walnut street bridge with nearly 100 vendors, products included everything from dog clothes, food, snacks, trainers, neuter clinics, shampooers, nail clippers, birthday party hats, and on and on.

Woofstock Harrisburg is held the third Saturday of September at Riverfront Park

Since Chief does not have his own _mg_2220transportation, Jill and I took him to Woofstock, so he could man, ‘er “dog”,  the booth, along with several other volunteers for the Capital Area Greenbelt Trail.  Chief’s job was to greet the visiting dogs and share stories of his many experiences walking the Greenbelt.

We arrived early so we could check out the Stage Cover (20 x 20 tent on 9 ft 07woofstock1legs) installed at Kunkle Plaza as the main entertainment stage, as well as the podium for announcing winners of the Grateful Dog Walk fundraiser, winners of the Raffle, and various other activities.07woofstock-91
If you are interested in helping “Rescues”, or would actually like to help a certain breed, I urge you to look over CPAA’s RESCUE PARTNERS, made of good people who are furthering the cause of “No more Homeless Pets”.

For those who might be willing to donate time or money to CPAA, check out all the possibilities at their website http://www.cpaa.info/give.html  .

Meanwhile at the Capital Area Greenbelt booth:

Chief and Jill Rondeau, Past President of the Greenbelt wait for passers-by…

When a family walks by, Chief greets the new friend with a sniff and invites them in to look  at the Greenbelt map. The map shows the 22 mile linear park trail which runs entirely on the East Shore, connecting about 15 parks in various townships, Harrisburg City, county property, HACC, and State Hospital Grounds.

Hey, they let you “Little Guys” in too?

img_3857

Chief and I head off to the Tented Stage to watch The Grateful Dog Walk awards presentation for fund raising, as well as one of the many scheduled music groups who played throughout the day.

And finally at the end of a long day,  relaxing for a much needed rest.

Carlisle Regional Medical Center Ushers in Spring – Family Fun and Safety Day

The last of the snow is melted at Ski Roundtop, and our thoughts naturally turn to spring/summer outdoor activities.  What better way to welcome the warm weather than to attend the Family Fun and Safety Day at the new hospital facility on the western end of Carlisle.

Providing medical services in a small community is important, but there are other ways to invest your business into the community.  Carlisle Hospital uses this event to reach out to a community who otherwise might only come to them in a time of crisis.

Here is some of what will be going on Saturday:

Looking Back
At the turn of the century the Medical Center began plans to build a complete new facility at their current location because they were land-locked in a building which would not allow them to embrace the newer technology, let alone provide enough parking for staff and visitors.
2004 – EC was called on to provide a small tent for the official ground breaking ceremony.
2006 -The New Medical Center was getting the finishing touch.  The Grand Opening took place  in February, to be attended by a thousand friends, contributors and community leaders. For this event, EC erected a 60 x 120 Anchor Century Tent with Walls, Heat, Lights, Seating and Stage  to be used over a 2 day period.

Michele Engle’s Event to raise 20K for Leukemia

April 19′th update

Good news!   The event was a great success.  Look back for another post with pictures and a recap of the event’s accomplishments!

Below is the Pre-event post.  STW

Recently Michele Engle decided to step up the fight against Leukemia & Lymphoma, by joining their Annual fundraiser ”Man & Woman of the Year”.  Michele’s goal is to raise $20,000  in her competition against area business people. Michele is the Account Executive  for the Central Penn Business Journal where EC does some advertising.

Like any fundraiser, you have to spend money to make money.  engleMichele had been to a successful Casino Night at Harrisburg Regional Chamber Business Expo Preview Party.  Of course the money spent on the Banquet facilities comes right out off the bottom line of donated money for the event.    Michele had attended Event Central’s 20th Anniversary Party and seen the success of hosting 250 clients.  So she approached Scott Schultz about using Journal Publications Warehouse, but after seeing the site, Scott suggested Event Central’s warehouse (during  off season), would be better suited to host the Casino Night in the Tent Wash Bay and the Adjacent 12 Ft wide aisles between  Tents, dishes and glasses.

Michele and Scott will be transforming about 4000 Square feet into a Casino Hall, with a  Food and Beverage area and an educational display on the Leukemia & Lymphoma challenge.  BRP Entertainment will provide Pit Boss Crew and half the gaming tables. Other providers for this great fund raiser will be Don and Carla Noss of Sir D’s Catering, Pete Dibacco of Premier Production Services for lighting and Event Central will provide the facility, lots of tables, chairs, linens and carpeting.  And Elvis himself will be visiting along with his host Nick Ferraro.

Join Michelle Engle for a night of gaming April 18
Michele, has set a lofty goal of $20,000 because she wants to invest in others misfortunes.  Leukemia’s are the most common cancers in children and young adults under the age of 18. Each dollar raised in Michele’s name counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most donations is named our local Man or Woman of the Year.

Martin Luther King Memorial Dedication on Capital Area Greenbelt

Note: Capital Area Greenbelt is a 22-mile trail connecting multiple Harrisburg Communities, State grounds and County grounds into a continuous loop which includes the 5 Senses Garden,   Springhouse on Paxtang Parkway, and Harrisburg Waterfront, among others.

Scott and Event Central Staff,
Just wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your outstanding service and for helping to  pull our organization out of a jam with grace and style! Our event, The Capital Area Greenbelt Association’s dedication of a monument to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came about much more quickly than we’d anticipated. Community response was overwhelming! Before we knew it, the success was breeding more success and we found ourselves in need of a podium and a great deal of seating.. and we needed it to be discreetly delivered to a serene, quiet, but maybe a little out-of-the-way location along the Greenbelt trail. There were local and international dignitaries to be in attendance that must be accommodated !
What to do ??
Enter: Event Central! The delivery and set up of all the seating was accomplished quickly on a chilly morning and everything fell in to place perfectly ! It was an amazing day full of moving oratory, hope, promise and inspiring thought, prayer and song. We couldn’t have done it without you!! Then, following the event, the pick up by Dwayne was expedient and professional. We can’t thank you enough for working with us with a last minute notice and for all the tips given that contributed to the success of our dedication!

 Warm Regards,
Jill Rondeau, President
Capital Area Greenbelt Association
p.s. we were fortunate to get some great photos of the event too.. enjoy !!

HBG Hilton joins with Event Central to help the needy across the country with Mission Central

When the Harrisburg Hilton contacted us to rent a warehousing tent for the delivery of new furniture for the Hotel Room Renovation, it seemed like a routine winter rental. While installing the tent , the Facilities Engineer for the Hilton talked about the refrigerators they were throwing away. While EC had no interest, we contacted the Executive Director at Mission Central of Mechanicsburg, who gladly accepted the donation of 50 refrigerators.

Three employees from EC led by Dale Warren volunteered an afternoon to drive 2 trucks, and transport the refrigerators to Mission Central’s Warehouse.

Scott Schultz – GM for Event Central volunteers his time at Mission Central on weekends. They are a central collection and distribution

point for donated products from the Central PA area. Their goods are donated through the kindness of Individuals, Businesses and Churches in the area. They have sent medical supplies, educational supplies, and daily living supplies and equipment to destinations such as Africa, Argentina, Kenya, Belarus, and other areas where the needs are great. Our work in disaster response has provided aid for people affected by every major weather event since 2003.
