When is it Safe to use Water Barrels to Anchor Tents

Can plastic barrels full of water provide the holding power necessary for safe tenting?  This educational blog explains alternative ways to safely anchor a tent without stakes.
** At the bottom of the article are several links to discussion by industry experts

Water barrels have their place in tent anchoring, but not for this long term rental

Water barrels have their place in tent anchoring, but not for this long term rental

Manufacturer’s Design for Stakes

A manufacturer usually engineers their tent anchoring around the data provided in studies for stakes and their holding power.  When a tent manufacturer designs a tent from the ground up, the engineers produce written specifications for anchoring. These specifications will be conveyed to the tent installer in an installation manual, which often includes drawings.  The staking is then applied to the site-specific situation where the installer takes into consideration several factors:

  • site wind exposure (valley vs top of hill)

Wind is a variable we cannot control

Wind is a variable we cannot control

  • 5 day forecast
  • duration of rental
  • soil density (holding power) for staking
  • soil water saturation (drought vs muddy)
  • nearby structures (building, trees)
  • the size of the tent (surface area)

Not all customer’s sites can tolerate staking.

There are situations where customers will not allow stakes to be placed in the ground.  This is when “anchoring with ballast” is used.  Ballast can take many forms, but the most common method is concrete block or water barrels.

Small Tents with water barrels

Water barrels cheap to buy, but don't hold much

Water barrels easy to find, but not much holding power

Water Barrels will work with many small tent installations as long as the weather forecast is taken into consideration.  Water barrels do not have substantial holding power against strong winds because they are top heavy, easily tipped over or will easily slide along the ground surface. Tent widths of 10′ and 15′ present smaller wind surface areas with little challenge to secure.  Tents 20′ wide and larger present greater surfaces for the wind to push against.  If a 20′ wide tent does not require sidewall, the wind-load is lessened. When using water barrels the final decision for the number of barrels needed is best determined based on the weather as close to possible to the installation date.

Large Tents need concrete ballast

Winds act on sails like they act on tents

Winds act on sails like they act on tents

Event Central’s policy is to use Concrete Block for all tents measuring 30′ and wider because safety is no accident. These size tents present huge wind surface area (square footage) far exceeding the sail area of the America’s Cup Sailboats. A study conducted by one tent manufacturer verified through testing that one – 1000# concrete weight has the equivalent holding power of 10 – 385# water barrels, and ultimately presents a much cleaner finish to the tent installation.

Proper installation of Concrete Ballast

The most effective method of anchoring with ballast is to use a system of Concrete ballast placed on an anti skid surface (rubber mat) which reduces the sideway friction on a blacktop or concrete driveway.  For every tent leg, there must be a ballast pairing.  A leg not secured to a stake or ballast becomes a  ”floating” leg when exposed to high winds, ultimately the “weakest link” of the tent installation.

Professional Party Tent Installations Require PA One Call Notification

Natural Gas Fire from Construction AccidentHeadline reads:
BACKHOE HITS NATURAL GAS PIPELINE

(800)242-1776

Most tent stakes are installed between 2 and 4 feet deep. Safe tenting begins with knowing what is under ground prior to installation.
This includes all tent installations, such as:
- Residential Back Yards
- Universities
- City Property
- Ground Breaking for construction projects

42 inch stake

Pennsylvania State Law

Drawing Credit - Anchor Installation Guide

Drawing Credit - Anchor Installation Guide

Law requires contractors and tent installers to contact the PA One Call System to locate all underground utilities prior to installation of tents where below-surface anchoring is used.

WHO MAKES THE CALL!

The tent company scheduling the installation must make the call to request public utility marking at least 3 business days prior to the installation. PA One Call provides this service coordination on behalf of all utilities so the customer will not have to guess what utilities exist on their site.  When requesting the service, we provide a general description of the area of the property where the tent will be is located. The markings are usually done with spray paint on the grass, black top, or concrete surface.

The customer is required to arrange ground markings of all private utilities underground at the site where the tent is to be installed. The tent rental company can not be held responsible for accidentally damaging an private underground utility when its location is not physically marked.
Markings should include private utilities such as
:
* sprinkler and water lines
* electrical and communication lines
* sewer and storm water drain lines
* any other underground utilities particular to the property

Pennsylvania Safety Days Training

Every year,  PA One Call holds Safety Day events across the state to help increase the public and contractor awareness of different products and services that are available to promote safe operations.  The recent event included vendors of specialized digging products, workplace safety presentations by OSHA, hands on displays showing cause and effect surrounding underground activities.  Event Central has provided tenting to support many of these Central PA events.

Emergency Shelter – Losberger RDS – Rapid Deployment System

Mayor Giuliani - Photo Credit - Newsweek

When disaster strikes - Ground Zero

RDS – Rapid Deployment System is an acronym you will be seeing more and more if you are involved in the Emergency Response Community. Losberger-Germany recently held an open house & training event at the Losberger-U.S. plant in Frederick, MD.  The event was used to showcase over 20 different RDS systems and their various accessories such as power distribution, HVAC, decontamination facilities and much more.

What do FedEx and Losberger RDS system have in common?

What do FedEx and Losberger RDS system have in common?

Event Central - located in Pennsylvania’s capital seat is working with the Losberger U.S. RDS  Team to promote the shelter system to the various organizations,  associations, and lobbyist groups in PA who support the interests of Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and FEMA.

And so it is in every state where forward thinking Emergency Management Agency’s are including the purchase of Rapid Deployment Shelters into their budgets. This also gives them the opportunity to take advantage of Federal and State funding that is available through grants to State Emergency Management Agency’s (EMA) and First Responders.  Using services like FedEx,  EMA’s can provide rapid shipment of emergency shelters by air to any point in the US.  A disaster occurrence in Joplin, MO at 2pm, with a call to the EMA by 4pm could mean a 100 person emergency shelter is up and running the next morning, helping disaster victims.

In order to support this initiative , Losberger Europe has shipped several sea containers of RDS inventory to their Frederick, MD manufacturing and distribution facility. Losberger also provides extensive support by linking customers of its RDS product to various integrated partners to provide HVAC, power distribution, lighting, and large structure rentals.

Multiple shelters linked together for severe weather response

Losberger U.S. has targeted this product for use in a wide range of events:

  • Hurricane and storm response Losberger US
  • FEMA office shelter
  • First Aid complex
  • Decontamination facilities
  • Field surgery facility in war
  • Aviation crash site
  • Temporary hospital

Below are some pictures taken at the Frederick Training Event.  The shelters were installed in a vacant warehouse adjacent to the Distribution Facility located near the Airport. There were over 50 organizations in attendance.
