Christmas is a wonderful time of year because it’s filled with the joy of gift-giving. But for the many people and families in need, this is a time of year that can be exceptionally lonely and stressful. As we celebrate the season, we also have the ability to help many people in need. Here are just a few ideas for how you can give back this Christmas!
- Host a party with a purpose
This is the time of year when holiday parties take over our social calendar. If you’re planning to host a holiday party of your own, make it stand out by giving it a greater purpose. By this we mean making it a fundraiser for a charity that is near and dear to your heart. Ask guests to bring a donation, maybe a new winter coat or a canned good item, in lieu of a hostess gift. Or instead of a Secret Santa gift exchange, “adopt” a local family in need and purchase items on their wish list to be donated.
- Make it part of your family tradition
Another great way to give back during the holidays is to make it part of your family tradition. Get the kids involved and have them purchase and wrap a present for another child in need. Make it a family night out together at the store! So often we get caught up in what we want for Christmas, but forget to think about others. This tradition, or one like it, will reset the focus and meaning of Christmas.
- Donate your time and talents
Finally, giving back during the holidays doesn’t have to cost much. If you’re budget is tight, consider giving the best gift of all, the gift of your time and talents. You can volunteer at any number of local charities – simply call them and ask how you can help! If you have a talent to share, like decorating the tables at the soup kitchen for their Christmas dinner or baking a homemade dessert, share these gifts to help make the holidays brighter!
